The Hand of Glory is a talisman made from the severed hand of a hanged man. Some legends specify the left hand of a murderer cut from him as he still dangled from the gallows. It was then either preserved by pickling or drying and affixed with a candle made from human fat, or dipped into tallow itself so that the fingers could be lit. It was used by thieves to make their victims fall into a deep slumber from which they will not wake until the flames of the hand are doused. Supposedly, if the thumb of the hand would not light it was a warning that there was someone in the house who would be immune to the hand's power. According to some tales, the hand could only be extinguished by milk.
