I don't know if I just had overblown expectations after a four month summer hiatus, but this episode just seemed a little like a letdown. I'm not saying it was all bad, I mean, I enjoyed it. Sam's comment in the car after seeing Dean in flagrante delecto was funny, and the way they introduced Ruby certainly got my attention, but...
The actress who played Tamara just seemed a bit off... like she was over acting it - trying too hard. The demon personalities bordered on campy, especially Pride, but I did like the way they worked in a bit of an explanation of Sam's status. It seems that now that old Yellow Eyes is dead there's no more need for a general for Hell's army.
Perhaps it will be better the second time I watch it. I think I was just so excited about season three finally starting that my expectations were too high. And of course, Jensen and Jared were worth watching, even if everything else seemed a just little off, and there's still a whole season to go. Can't wait till next Thursday :)
Ruby the killer?
One thing I did notice about Ruby was that she didn't shirk away from killing the humans that were being possessed, she made no attempt to save them. Could this mean that she's not in the hunting gig to save people, that she just does it for the rush? Or does she believe that this is war and there are going to be casualties, so who cares as long as the job gets done? If her attitude is that later then she's really going to clash with the Brothers, Sam in particular, who go out of their way to save the innocent life even if it means letting the bad guys go to kill another day (Crossroad Blues, instead of sending her back to hell - most likely saving many souls in the process - Dean opted to save the innocents life and cut the deal) (Croatoan, Sam couldn't kill the young boy because he didn't know if there was a way to save him or not, although Dean was more ready to believe that they were goners).
Good point
I hadn't thought about that, but you are right. Ruby didn't seem to care that she killed three innocent people along with the demons. I think that's going to end up being a big friction point between her and Sam and Dean. And the way she just showed up then vanished, I don't think the boys will ever really trust her.
Really? I liked Tamara,
Really? I liked Tamara, (maybe it's just cause she's English), but I thought she was great, and the way she was affected by her husbands death I thought was great. If we see her again I wonder if she's going to go a little crazy from losing him?
Bobby (as always) was awesome, and seeing him in a suit, LMAO.
Dean's attitude to only having a year to life was spot on but I think we all know it's not going to last, it does appear that he's gone a little mad but it's probably just his cover. It's amazing how spot on all the fanfics have been, with Sam constantly researching a way to get Dean out of his deal. I do like that Dean told Sam about the loophole that if they try and weasel out of it Sam would die, that's going to add to the angst big time.
And OMG, that knife!!! What a weapon. I can't wait till we find out about that and how she got hold of it. What a great way to introduce the character. :D
Bi-polar Dean
Yeah, Bobby in a suit was great, I never thought we'd see him without his ballcap.
I think Dean is going to be full of ups and downs this season - hedonistic, live it up while I still have time, followed by "Oh my God, what have I done?" lows. It's going to be one hell of a ride.
I noticed with Ruby's knife, the light effects were similar to, if not quite as spectacular as, what the colt does. I wonder if there is a connection there.
Someone did speculate that
Someone did speculate that she could be a descendant of Colt himself, which would explain things but could be way too cliché.
I wonder if Dean's going to be really reckless in his hunting, like, 'well it doesn't matter if I die cause I'm dead anyway.' Maybe it'll take him nearly dying to kick him on his ass and knock some sense into him. Or maybe nearly losing Sam, to remind him that he still has to be careful and can still protect Sam for the rest of the time he has left.
I'm really interested to see how they do solve the problem of his deal, wonder if they do anything like we did LMAO.
