Abraham Van Helsing was created by Bram Stoker to be the nemesis of Dracula. He as appeared in many forms in many movie adaptations of Stoker's work, and he has been the inspiration for a variety of vampire hunters in fiction. He is the original - knowledgeable, cool headed, witty, tough as nails.
In the novel Dracula he is called in to help diagnose the mysterious illness of Lucy Westenra by one of her many suitors, Dr. Seward, who was a former student of Van Helsing's. The professor recognizes the signs of a vampire's involvement. After Lucy's death he leads Seward and her other suitors to her tomb to behead her. Later he leads them to Transylvania to confront Dracula himself.
