Bloody Mary

The Bloody Mary legend is one that most school children are familiar with. It is a dare, a game played on sleep-overs by children to scare one another. The details of the legend vary, but central to it is always a mirror. Bloody Mary is said, in various versions, to be a witch, a murdered woman, a suicide, an evil spirit that can be summoned by chanting her name while looking in a mirror in a darkened or candle-lit room. It is said that if her name is chanted the correct number of times, and the number changes from version to version, that Mary will appear in the mirror. In some versions of the tale she is simply a very scary sight, one that can turn the veiwer's hair stark white in an instant. Other variations have her telling her summoner the day and hour of thier death, and the most common of the legends say that she will pluck out the eyes of anyone who sees her.
