Uncle Monday

Uncle Monday is a powerful spirit, or perhaps a man, who lives in the Everglades of Florida (though I have heard stories that put him in the Louisiana swamps). He has the power to manifest himself as a huge alligator.

According to an excerpt from Zora Neal Hurston's Go Gator and Muddy the Water, Uncle Monday was a great medicine man who was kidnapped from his tribe in Africa and brought to theStates as a slave. He escaped from a rice plantation in either Georgia or South Carolina and fled south to join with the Native Americans in Florida to fight against the white man. When the combined forces of the indians and escaped slaves were pushed back to the shores of Lake Belle near Maitland, Florida, and all seemed to be lost, Uncle Monday declared that he was of the Alligator Clan, and that he would join his brothers, but that he would walk the shores of the lake again in peace one day.

Most of the stories about Uncle Monday are tied up with hoodoo and conjure work, and Uncle Monday is himself supposed to be a powerful conjure worker.

Here is a charm I found that can be used if you ever run afoul of him:

Sunday's Dying
and Saturday's Dead
Friday's Crawling
into Thursday's Bed
Wednsday's Drunk
and Tuesday's Fled
and Monday's Bound
