A Phantom Hitchhiker is a ghost who haunts the roadways, usually a young woman or teenage girl. Looking forlorn and distressed, and often dressed for a party or dance, she will flag down a ride. The driver who is kind enough to pick up the spirit will give her a lift home, only to find the passenger seat empty when they arrive at the destination. Other versions tell of kind men who gave the girl their coats, and upon returning the next day to retrieve the coat are told by puzzled relatives that the girl died years before. A visit to the grave often turns up the loaned coat draped across the tombstone.
Phantom Hitchhikers, while unnerving for those who give them lifts, are rarely dangerous.
Another story, told in a song by Red Sovine, reverses the usual tale and has a living hitchhiker picked up by a phantom truck driver. The truck driver gives the man a dime for coffee and drops him off at a truck stop. Upon mentioning the driver’s name, the young man is told that the driver was killed ten years ago that very night when he swerved to avoid a busload of kids and lost control of his rig.
