Rawhead and Bloody Bones is a boogie man of English legend and folktales. He is sometimes called simply Rawhead, or Tommy Rawhead, or even Old Bones. The stories are thought to have originated in Ireland, but they have spread throughout the UK, and even into American folktales.
In some cases, like in tales from around Yorkshire, he is a water demon who lies in wait to pull children down into deep ponds and marl-pits. In more modern versions, he lives in dark cupboards and pulls naughty children down the drain pipes. He sometimes will turn naughty children into pieces of trash or spots of jam which are inadvertently wiped up or thrown away.
He is said to have a hunching form, like a rock, and a body covered with matted hair. In some versions the top of his head has no skin, only a bare, bloody skull. He lives in dark places, like basements, or under the stairs, or in the cabnets under the sink.
He has make the leap to America, where his story has changed. Here is an example of a tale about Raw Head and Bloody Bones from the Missouri Ozarks that bears little resemblace to the original European stories.
Supernatural: Season 1, Episode 12, Faith - The episode startes with Sam and Dean in the basement of an old house looking for two kidnapped children.
