"Let me be a refuge..."--By Paleogymnast (PG-13)

AN: The Impala talking to Sam, a drabble monologue from the Impala's POV (yes, that's 1st Person Metalicar). This is something we all hope doesn't come to pass, but if it does, well... read for yourself. Set just over a year after the events of AHBL2 (Episode 2.22). Allusions to events in episodes 1.22, 2.01, 2.02, 2.21; vague spoilers for everything else. Characters: Metalicar, mentions of Sam Winchester and Dean Winchester Rating: PG-13 (for dark angsty themes; could probably pass as PG, but rating higher just in case) Word Count: 444 Disclaimer: I don't own anything and no money is being made. The Metalicar, Sam, and Dean are all property of their creators (Kripke, the CW, Warner Bros., et al.). This is a work of fiction written for entertainment purposes only. Let me be a refuge for you, boy. No, once child, now man… soul that has grown under my watch. Apart we are both lost. Me without my owner, the one who cared for me, protected me, allowed himself to be free in me. You without your family. All of them now gone. Lonely and alone, no one to share your stories with, no one who knows your past—your real past, the life you’ve actually led. But together we are different. Two parts of a puzzle, long dismantled, that almost make a whole. Our loss is the same. Without him we are not who we need to be. I am but an ordinary car without a driver. With no one to care for me or restore me, or save me from a rusty, crumpled doom. You are but a brother now alone. Missing your best friend, parent, confidant—the other half of your soul now gone forever. With no one to get your back on a hunt, no one to believe in you, no one to save you from yourself. We have both existed in the shadow of a man so great his worth was more brilliant than the sun. Now he is gone and we are withering in the sudden glare. He never understood who he really was, but we knew and we know, and we can carry on his legacy and make sure others know. We both were gone—lost, dead, demolished—and he saved us. He brought us back… but we were both instruments in each others resurrection. You, by refusing to allow others to scrap me, me by taking him to the place that sealed his fate and restored your life. It’s not the same, I know, and you know, but together we have a chance. I to find a new person to love and care for me, to share their stories, and make a home in me. You to find an echo of that which you have lost, a sanctuary from all the pain in your life. I’m not him, but he shared his soul with me; all his love and memories poured out through his sweat and labor. You’re not him, but he loved you more than life itself, and anything dear and precious to him is dear and precious to me. Come with me, Sam. Let me take you on the rest of life’s journey. Together we can live a life that is worthy of him. We can use the second chance he has given us to save the world in his honor. Dean may be gone, but together we will make sure he lives on.

Trying to make me cry!

You're trying to make me cry aren't you Paley?
I didn't even know you'd writen this, it was pure luck I came across it but I'm glad I did. It would seem fitting that Sam use the Impala when Dean's gone, keep it the way he did and in return the Impala can care for Sam, shelter him, be his home and together they can share the memory of Dean and in some small way keep him and his dreams alive.
You caused a lump in my throat reading that, it was beautiful, Pales.
Thank you for sharing.

Thanks!

Aw, thanks lyca. I wrote and posted this on a whim at 3am on morning, which is why there was no fanfare surrounding it. :D I'm glad you liked it. Apparently, I also enjoy making people (and myself) cry, since most of what I write seems to turn out that way. Thank you for reading and commenting!!
