The Cockatrice is a legendary creature that is supposedly hatched from an egg laid by a rooster and hatched by a toad. It has the head of a rooster, the body and tail of a snake, and the wings of a bat. Related to the Basilisk, the Cockatrice has many of the same powers. The only real difference between the two is that the Cockatrice has the legs of a rooster, while the Basilisk is usually portrayed as being more snake-like.
It has the power to turn any living thing to stone with only a glance, and its breath wilts the plants around it. Some legends also tell of it breathing fire. The only creature that is immune to the power of the Cockatrice is the weasel. Supposedly the power of the Cockatrice remains active after the creature is dead.
It can be killed by forcing it to look at its own reflection, and reportedly will also drop dead if it hears a cock crow.
